Cross border initiative
The PEAT+ Project is a major €19.2 million cross border initiative focused on restoring peatlands, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting climate action across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.
Led by Ulster Wildlife and funded through the PEACEPLUS Programme, the project brings together a wide partnership of local authorities, research institutions, environmental organisations and statutory bodies, including Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark.
Large-scale habitat restoration
Over the next three years, PEAT+ will deliver large-scale habitat restoration across 19 priority peatland sites. These efforts aim to return damaged peatlands to a healthier, functioning state where they can store carbon, support wildlife, improve water quality and help reduce flood risk. Peatlands are among the world’s most important natural carbon stores, yet an estimated 80% of Irish peatlands are currently degraded and releasing carbon. Restoring them is therefore critical for both climate mitigation and nature recovery.
Alongside practical restoration works, the project will drive innovation and research, deepen understanding of peatland ecology, and promote the cultural and natural heritage of these unique landscapes. Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark plays a key role in this collaborative effort, helping to protect internationally significant peatland habitats and strengthen cross-border environmental stewardship.
