Grainne O’Connor

Geopark Manager

Responsibilities: I am responsible for providing strategic leadership for the conservation, promotion and sustainable management of the Geopark. I oversee conservation of geological, natural and cultural heritage while supporting community engagement, education and research. I am responsible for cultivating and coordinating cross-border partnerships, managing staff and budgets, delivering sustainable tourism development, capital funded projects bids, and ensuring compliance with UNESCO Global Geopark requirements. I also develop projects that balance environmental protection with tourism and local economic development, liaise with local authorities and relevant stakeholders, and monitor performance, reporting, and long-term planning to maintain the Geopark’s UNESCO status.

Five words to describe yourself: Empathetic, Strategic, Collaborative, Dedicated, and Honest.

What is your favourite thing about working with the Geopark?

Working with the Geopark offers the privilege of protecting a remarkable landscape while inspiring people who live in, work in, and visit it. Seeing communities, nature conservation, education, and sustainable tourism come together to create pride, opportunity, and lasting stewardship within a UNESCO designation is the most rewarding part of the role overall professionally. Personally, to be able to call this landscape my place of work and work with such a motivated, proactive and dedicated team is a great privilege.
