Heritage
The area immediately surrounding the viewpoint is home to one of the largest expanses of intact blanket bog in Ireland, protected as a Special Area of Conservation and including many interesting plant species such as deer grass and bog asphodel. The area is also home to rare bird species such as Golden Plover, Peregrine and Merlin, which you may be lucky to spot on a beautiful clear day.
Bogland is an extremely fascinating process that requires perfect conditions in order to grow and thrive. The process is thousands of years in the making, with 1cm of bog taking 1000 years to form, which is pretty mind boggling. Bogland has been significant to local communities of this area for many hundreds of years. With families coming together to gather peat to warm their homes, it is a practice and substance of much cultural and historical significance. Even now, you will see families come together when the time has come for peat to be harvested; A practice that holds tradition and culture at its heart. Knowing this, you can easily appreciate why this view is just so special, as well as visually stunning.
